US Census Bureau Job: Work from Home

US Census Bureau Jobs are now available for work from home during the 2020 US Census! These unique work from home jobs are only available every 10 years.  The US conducts a census of the population to count how many people live here and where they live. It’s a big job and requires additional field agents to get all the work done.

Apply to be a field agent during the 2020 Census, and you could have a temporary way to earn extra money from home.

Census Taker Job Description

The census is confidential, and the information gathered is used to help the US government create policy  and funding based on  American demographics. The census determines the amount of federal aid given to communities and determines each state’s congressional representation.

So, what does a census taker do? You basically go door to door in residential areas to verify addresses in the community before the Census. During the census, you will be required to return to the residential areas to interview anyone who has not completed the census mailing.

As a field representative you will be required to ask questions that some see as intrusive and may cause some people to feel uncomfortable. The questions are basic demographic questions related to ethnicity, income, marriage status, place of birth, etc.

GS-03: 6 months of general experience or 1 year above high school.

GS-04: 1 year of general experience or 2 years above high school.

You must be able to work days, evenings, and weekends. You will be paid for training and travel. There may be some travel involved that you will be required to attend.

Hiring Process for US Census Jobs

Written Basic Skills Test

Part of the hiring process is taking the Field Employee Selection Aid test. This is a test of 28 multiple choice questions that assess basic arithmetic, map skills, and other abilities needed to complete the job as a census bureau taker.

You can take census bureau jobs practice tests here.

Mock Interview

The mock interview is a phone interview. When I did some research, it appears that this interview is very brief. On the Field Representative Recruitment bulletin it says they will keep your score on file for the mock interview and as long as you have an active application file.

Structured Interview

There wasn’t much to description of the structure interview, but based off of some research it appears that this is an interview completed in the office. The questions are basic and mostly cover your resume. Again, the Field Representative Recruitment bulletin says they will keep your score on file as long as you have an active file.
